- Highs Extremely quick, good driving range, nationwide access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.
- Lows Falcon Wing rear doors are silly and too complex, uneven quality of cabin materials, large touchscreen is a distraction.
- Verdict The Model X is futuristic and can be freakishly fast, but its interior lacks the panache and quality we expect of a luxury SUV in this price range.
Overview
The 2017 Tesla Model X is a unique take on an electric vehicle with its minivan-meets-SUV shape and wild rear doors. In case you’ve never seen them in action, the “Falcon Wing” doors mimic a DeLorean DMC by swinging upward from the roof. They’re amazing if you’re into sci-fi, less endearing if you planned to install a roof rack on your Model X. The cabin has loads of stretch-out space for passengers, and the view ahead is outstanding thanks to the panoramic windshield that stretches over the front seats. Performance ranges from really quick to scary fast, depending on your chosen powertrain and how hard you hit the accelerator. When it comes to transporting up to seven people in speed and eerie electric silence, the Model X makes a statement.
What's New for 2017?
Tesla likes to make continual over-the-air improvements to its range of electric vehicles, and this holds true for the Model X, now in its second year of production. The biggest news for 2017 is the addition of a 100-kWh battery pack that improves range and provides extra performance, especially when you travel in the aptly named Ludicrous Mode.
Pricing
Original MSRP:
- 75D: $80,700
- 90D: $94,700
- 100D: $97,200
- P100D: $141,200
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Model X is available with four choices of battery pack. These range from the entry-level 75D, to the mid-range 90D, and upward to the new 100D and P100D variants. All-wheel drive is standard across the entire range. Speaking of range, there is 238 miles in the 75D, 257 miles in the 90D, and up to 295 miles in the 100D with its larger battery pack. The P100D (the P is for "performance") has the same battery as the 100D, but its increased zip drops range to 289 miles. Access to Tesla’s nationwide network of Supercharger stations is a major plus point with the Model X—or any Tesla, for that matter. Handling is sharp in the Model X, and its suspension keeps it nice and level, even during hard cornering. But it’s the supercar-like acceleration that makes the Model X so special. In P100D format with Ludicrous Mode engaged, you need less than 3.0 seconds to sprint from zero to 60 mph. Of course, the Model X also features AutoPilot, Tesla’s self-driving system. At some point down the road, Tesla has stated its range of vehicles will be remotely updated and acquire full self-driving capability. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy punching the throttle in Ludicrous Mode with our hands firmly on the steering wheel.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The first thing you notice in the cabin of the Model X is the massive central screen that dominates the dashboard. That's it for interior adornment; Tesla cabins are either wildly futuristic or depressingly spartan-looking, depending on your point of view. The first and second row are very roomy for adults, though the optional third row of seating is best left for kids. The seat cushions themselves leave something to be desired, as they’re flat and not very supportive during long drives. Cabin quality issues also continue to plague the Model X. Cargo space behind the first row of seats measures a respectable 87.8 cubic feet, but interior storage is in short supply, and those futuristic wing doors eliminate the opportunity for carrying rooftop cargo.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Did we mention that massive screen in the center of the dashboard? That’s your one and only information source and point of contact in the Model X. This 17.0-inch touchscreen has sharp graphics and large touch-points, making it easier to control while driving. But it’s still difficult not to be distracted by the system. We know Tesla is all about innovative tech, but a few buttons or knobs for frequently used items (like volume control or temperature settings) would make this cabin more user friendly. Standard features include navigation with live traffic alerts, Bluetooth, and a nine-speaker audio system.
