2022 BMW M4 Competition launched at Rs 1.44 crore | Autocar India (2024)

The new BMW M4 comes only in 510hp Competition guise; 0-100kph in 3.5 seconds (claimed) with a top-speed of 250kph.

BMW has launched the all-new M4 Competition in India today, with prices starting from Rs 1.44 crore (ex-showroom, India). The new-gen BMW M4 made its global debut in September 2020, and has finally landed in India in its top-rung Competition guise. The latest iteration of the M4 comes with a straight-six petrol engine with all-wheel drive and, of course, a radical new design language.

  • BMW M4 Competition is powered by a 510hp, 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine
  • First ever M4 to be available with all-wheel drive
  • To rival the Audi RS5 Sportback

BMW M4 Competition: engine and performance

This being an M car, let’s start with what’s under the hood. Powering the new BMW M4 Competition is a newly developed twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre, straight-six petrol engine. In Competition guise, this longitudinally mounted engine produces 510hp and 650Nm of peak torque. Do note that this is not an all-new engine as it has already debuted with the X3M in India, but is offered in 480hp standard guise, not in Competition spec.

The engine comes mated to a ZF-sourced 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, replacing the 7-speed DCT unit from the previous generation. This is also the first time the BMW M4 is being offered with an all-wheel drive system, which comes as standard fitment on the India-spec model. BMW claims a 0-100 kph sprint time of 3.5 seconds, with top-speed being limited to 250kph.

Compared to the previous iteration of the M4, power and torque are up by 60hp and 100Nm respectively. The new M4 also comes equipped with adaptive M suspension and M Sport differential. The front and rear tracks have also increased by 34mm and 38mm, respectively.

BMW M4 Competition: exterior styling

Styling, of course, is a big talking point of the new BMW M4 Competition. The new M4 has divided opinions on its looks, but it certainly looks striking from every angle.

The face is dominated by a large vertical grille with seven double-horizontal louvres. The grille is flanked by a pair of adaptive LED headlamps with laser lights on either side. It also features an aggressively styled front bumper with gaping air intakes and sharp creases. Even the bonnet features two distinct indents as a sort of continuation of the grille.

When viewed in profile, you’ll notice the sloping coupe roofline, air ducts on the front fenders, and blacked-out 19- or 20-inch forged alloy wheels. At the rear, it gets a boot-mounted spoiler and a sharply sculpted rear bumper with a multi-channel diffuser and a pair of round tailpipes finished in black chrome on either side. The M4 Competition also gets carbon fibre-reinforced plastic roof in the interest of weight saving.

Compared to the previous iteration of the M4, the new model is 108mm longer, 18 mm wider and 1mm taller. Its wheelbase, at 2,857mm, is also 45mm longer than its predecessor.

BMW M4 Competition: interior and features

The cabin of the M4 Competition largely remains unchanged from the regular 4 Series, carrying over a familiar design from current-gen BMW models. It, however, does get some M specific touches with plenty of carbon fibre trims. There’re also new M Sport seats, an M Sport steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster and infotainment system with M-specific graphics and functions.

Some of the standout features on the new BMW M4 competition include a 12.3-inch digital instrument screen, 10.25-inch infotainment display, 3-zone automatic climate control, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, ambient lighting, head-up display, powered front seats with memory function and lumbar support, wireless charging and phone integration and more. Safety features include 6 airbags, ABS, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and more.

The interior is finished in an all-black theme with Merino leather, although multiple upholstery and trim choices are available as optional extras. Other extras include Driving Assistant Professional package, BMW display key, M compound brakes, gesture control, BMW drive recorder, exterior carbon fibre package, M racetrack package and more.

BMW M4 Competition: rivals in India

The BMW M4 Competition is imported to India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and only has the Audi RS5 Sportbackas its rival. Compared to the two-door M4 Competition, the RS5 Sportback is a four-door model, although the previous iteration of the RS5 was a two-door coupe. The latter is powered by a 450hp, twin-turbo V6 engine and sprints from 0-100kph in 3.9 seconds. While the Audi may be down on performance, it is also much more affordable at Rs 1.07 crore (ex-showroom, India). The BMW M4 Competition also rivals the Mercedes-AMG C63, although the latter has now been discontinued in India.
