WHAT IS “I WALK THE LINE”?
“I Walk the Line” was recorded at Sun Records in April 1956, about 2 weeks before Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto, had their 2nd daughter. It was his first No. 1 hit on the country charts and first gold record. Cash often said he wrote it as both a promise to Vivian and a reminder to himself to be faithful to their marriage vows. Alas, to paraphrase a line from an Eric Clapton song, how could they know that promises end. After 13 years of marriage and 4 children, the pair divorced in 1967.

“Walk the Line” is the title of a 2005 movie based on 2 Johnny Cash autobiographies, focusing mainly on his career and 2nd wife, June Carter. In “I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny” (2008), Vivian tells her story.
