This guide will instruct you on how to get a Totem Key and where to find a Totem Key’s corresponding Vault Location. The rewards you can expect in the vault depend on what kind of Totem you received.

Getting a Totem Key Through Tall Tales

Sea of Thieves: Where To Find Totem Keys and Vaults (1)

A recurring component to the Shores of Gold storyline is finding totem vaults. During a few Tall Tales in the Shores of Gold storyline, you will receive a Totem Key that belongs to a corresponding vault.

Once you find the Vault, you will have to place the Totem Key on the vaults pedestal, and then the door will unlock.

The Tall Tales in the Shores of Gold storyline are remarkably long and dynamic quests, and Totem Keys you receive on these quests will be somewhat random. The good news is that the Vault location for their corresponding Totem Key is not randomized.

There are three Tale Tales from Shores of Gold that use Totem Keys.

  • The first Tall Tale in Shores of Gold is The Shroudbreaker quest, which you can receive from the Mysterious Stranger inside any Outpost Tavern.
  • The second Tall Tale is Stars of a Thief, which is the fourth quest in the Shores of Gold storyline and is handed out by Sudds at The North Star Seapost.
  • The final Tall Tale that uses Totem Keys is The Art of the Trickster. It is the sixth tall tale and is given to you by Salty at the Plunder Valley Outpost.

Wayfinder Voyages can be purchased at any Gold Hoarders hut. To purchase one of these voyages, you need to reach level 25 and unlock the Gold Buccaneer promotion with the Gold Hoarders.

In these Wayfinder Voyages, you will be given a Golden Wayfinder compass, which you must use to find torn map pieces. Once you’ve traveled around a bit and found each torn map piece, you will be able to reconstruct the map and locate the buried treasure.

Inside this treasure chest will be a Treasure Vault Key, which is like a Totem Key. That said, the rewards inside the vault are different.

Totem Vault Locations

Depending on which Totem you received, you will need to find its corresponding vault location. The game will refer to these Totem Keys as Animal Totems, even though one of them is a moon. Look, Pirates wrote these instructions for you, not Zoologists.

What lies behind each vault door is entirely dependant on if you received the Key from a Tall Tale or a Wayfinder Voyage.

Where to Find The Vault

Crescent Isle

This vault is in the northern cave at the center of the island. After you reach the middle of the island. use your compass to figure out which direction is north. Then look for moon symbols on the cave walls.

Rewards

Sea of Thieves: Where To Find Totem Keys and Vaults (4)

After completing these Tall Tale quests you will receive 8,000 Gold pieces every time. This reward makes these longer quests worth it, but a word of warning - longer quests mean there’s a greater chance for things to go wrong. Be it either another crew of pirates or a glitch. If something does occur, you will likely lose all of your progress, so come prepared.

If you receive a Totem Treasure Key from a Wayfinder voyage, your reward is based on the material of the key. What sets these apart from the Totem Keys that you receive in the Tall Tales is that they lead to actual treasure, and the Totem Treasure Keys can also be sold to merchants.

The material of the Totem Treasure Key is dependant on your rank. For instance, you will receive Stone Treasure Keys from rank 25-25, Silver Treasure Keys from rank 35-45, and Gold Treasure Keys after rank 45. As for the monetary rewards, they break down like so:

Material

Base Gold Reward

Base Emissary Value

Stone

1,200-1,400

4125

Silver

2,300-2,400

7305

Gold

3,600-3,750

11325

If this was not confusing enough, you also get a bonus percentage of profits depending on your Emissary Grade. That scale functions as such:

Emissary Grade

Reward Multiplier

Grade 1

None

Grade 2

+33%

Grade 3

+67%

Grade 4

+100%

Grade 5

+150%
