Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category History & Nature) for Friday, July 7, 2023 (Season 39, Game 215):

In March 1519, these were again seen in mainland N. America for the first time in 10,000 years with the arrival of 16 of them

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Raquel Stewart, an accountant from Austin, Texas
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, July 7, 2023 (1)
Tom Zulewski, a sports writer & author from Washington, Utah
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, July 7, 2023 (2)
Alex Gordon, a medical student from Somers, New York (1-day total: $25,000)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, July 7, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Yesterday, Alex Gordon became the sixth different person in six episodes to win on Jeopardy!; however, it’s still nowhere near the record. Over the summer of 2002 (the end of season 18 and the beginning of season 19), there was a 15-episode stretch with 15 different winners. Today, Tom Zulewski and Raquel Stewart hope to make it 7 champions in 7 episodes by dethroning Alex. Alex did have a very strong game yesterday, though, so Tom and Raquel have their work cut out for them.

Meanwhile, there’s a small Eagles theme in the Jeopardy! round today; this is another case of prescience from the show’s writers, as the band announced its final tour yesterday.

According to PBS’ Nature, early species of the genus Equus roamed North America, spreading worldwide. However, most of North America’s large mammals, including horses, went extinct around 10,000 years ago. Horses did not return to the New World until Christopher Columbus brought them on his voyages. Hernán Cortés brought the horse onto the North American mainland in March 1519 during his conquest of Mexico. From there, the horses began to spread throughout North America, becoming an important part of Native American culture.
