Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Words From World War I) for Monday, February 13, 2023 (Season 39, Game 111):

“Cistern” & “reservoir” were suggested names for a secret invention, but the British preferred this less clumsy monosyllable

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Two-day champion Mira Hayward goes for her third victory today against Kendra Westerhaus and Jeff Paine. Mira has won from 2nd and 3rd place going into Final—how will things go today?

Next week begins the High School Reunion tournament, which takes place from Feb. 20–Mar. 9; whoever wins on Friday will return on March 10 to defend.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In order to preserve the secrecy of their new “landship” invention, the British decided to call their counter–poison gas invention a “tank” due to its resemblance to a steel water tank. The idea came from Winston Churchill, who, it is said, got the idea after he noticed how easily farm tractors fitted with “caterpillar” treads were able to travel on muddy ground (the World War I trenches being similar).

And because I suspect that military history is a subject that will bring out the know-it-alls: The citation for today’s Final Jeopardy! clue is the British publication Look and Learn, issue number 209, published 15 January 1966: “Although the Lincoln workmen had already called the weapon a “tank,” the next stage after the trials were successfully completed was the official choice of a name. Among those toyed with, and then rejected, were “container,” “receptacle,” “reservoir,” and “cistern.” None of them sounded as apt as “tank,” so tank it officially was.” (And yes, I will probably make fun of you in the comments if you ask in the comments about a citation.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • On the final Daily Double, I would pick either a wager of “all-in” (on the aggressive side) or “exactly $600” (on the conservative side).
  • Today’s box score: February 13, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Kendra $18,000 Mira $14,800 Jeff $13,000)

Mira: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma today; you can’t both win a Double Stumper with Kendra and cover Jeff. If you’re going aggressive, go all in to force a cover bet. If not, bet between $4,802—this covers Jeff’s low range—and $8,399, thereby winning a Double Stumper with Kendra. (Actual bet: $4,000)

Kendra: Standard cover bet over Mira is $11,601. (Actual bet: $11,601)

Jeff: If you’re going aggressive, bet at least $10,201 to force a cover bet out of Mira. If not, limit your bet to $3,000, to stay above Mira’s suggested low range. (Actual bet: $13,000)
