Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today, we move on to semifinal #2 in the 2024 Jeopardy Invitational Tournament, which features Larissa Kelly, Andrew He, and Sam Kavanaugh. I’m expecting to see fireworks on all three Daily Doubles in this game; I would even go as far as to say that Sam is probably the most underrated player in terms of Daily Double skill in modern Jeopardy—but I think he’d receive much more credit had his run not come a month and a half after James Holzhauer. Andrew He, of course, has made his own name out of big bets on Daily Doubles, and Larissa’s dominance comes from her mastery of the board material in general; I’m guessing Larissa will have the best Coryat score, but that the game will come down to who does best on the Daily Doubles.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Two of the three works that Coriolis is best known for today were published in 1835: Théorie Mathématique des Effets du Jeu de Billiard (the billiard ball physics treatise mentioned in the clue) and Sur les équations du mouvement relatif des systèmes de corps, a treatise on the transfer of energy in rotating systems. While Coriolis’s treatise had to do with water wheels, it was later realized that this would work on a significantly larger scale: specifically, the Earth. Later, the Coriolis force became often used in meteorology to explain cyclones and the movement of weather patterns.

Unfortunately, the most common reference to the Coriolis effect that most people know is generally false: no, water does not swirl into drains in different directions based on what hemisphere you are located in.
