Mexico captain Edson Alvarez has been ruled out of the remainder of Copa America with a hamstring injury.
Alvarez, 26, said in a video posted on social media that he will remain with the Mexico squad for the remainder of their tournament to offer his support.
Mexico said Alvarez’s injury was confirmed after tests in L.A. on Tuesday but did not provide an estimate on how long he faces on the sidelines, adding that the “recovery time will depend on the evolution of the player”.

How Mexico began their campaign with a win

A wonderful left-foot strike from Gerardo Arteaga, drilled low and hard across goal from just outside the box, gave Mexico a winning start at Copa America.
El Tri recovered from the loss of West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez in the first half after the Mexico captain limped off in agony, having fallen to the ground unchallenged clasping his left hamstring.
A very quiet NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas was made to wait for the start of the second half as Mexico took their time to re-join Jamaica on the field.
But it was Jamaica who were quicker out of the blocks, with Michail Antonio scoring his side’s first Copa America goal with a downward header, only for it to be disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
After both sides made changes, it was left-back Arteaga who sealed the points for Mexico. Job done and time to move on — albeit potentially without their captain.
How Venezuela battled back to beat Ecuador in opening match

Venezuela came from behind to beat 10-man Ecuador in California on Saturday to begin their 2024 Copa America campaign with a win last week.
Ecuador played the majority of the match with 10 players after their captain, Enner Valencia, was sent off for an incredibly ugly lunge on Venezuela defender Jose Martinez.
But Ecuador then took a deserved lead when Jeremy Sarmiento, who spent this season on loan at Ipswich Town from Brighton & Hove Albion, found the net with a low shot.
Venezuela made their one-man advantage count in the second half, however, and two goals in the space of 10 minutes secured them a vital win. First Jhonder Cadiz scored from Salomon Rondon’s layoff, with Eduard Bello smashing home a rebound to win the game.
