F-14 Tomcat Maverick
The F-14 Tomcat is a two-seat, twin-engine, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft that was developed for the United States Navy’s Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program. It was the first such U.S. jet fighter with twin tails.
The F-14 was the United States’ primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defence interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform from the 1970s to the 2000s. It served as the U.S. Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defence interceptor, and tactical reconnaissance platform.
The F-14 Tomcat was also one of the iconic plans used in both TopGun movies and so also the inspiration for the design of our version of the F-14 paper airplane.
This iconic fighter jet is a favourite among aviation enthusiasts and can be recreated using just a piece of paper and some folding techniques. With this guide, you’ll learn how to make a paper airplane F-14 Tomcat that can fly with ease and impress your friends and family.
Materials Needed
- A piece of A4 paper – or download template
- Folding block (optional)
- Ruler or straight edge (optional)
Getting started: Fine-Tune the Folding
You can use a ruler or straight edge to make sure all the edges and lines of your F-14 Tomcat are crisp and clean. You can also use a folding block to ensure the creases are true and correct
Turn the page around in the landscape position and fold it in half (side to side) making sure the edges line up perfectly. This will create a crease down the centre of the paper, which will serve as the centreline for your F-14 Tomcat.
With the folded end on the right-hand side, fold the bottom edge to the top. This will be the beginning of the fuselage for your F-14 Tomcat.
Turn the page back into the portrait position with the folded end on the right.
Stand the flap vertically, open the pocket and squash fold it by pushing down on the spine, continuing to fan out the layers landing the spine on the centre creases and flatting the folds following line nr.3
Close the flap to the right and stand the other flap vertically as well.
Open the pocket and squash fold it by pushing down on the spine, continuing to fan out the layers landing the spine on the centre creases and flatting the folds following line nr.4
Close the flap to the left and turn the model 90 degrees to the right. You should have two triangles stacked on top of each other.
Fold the top edge of the top triangle to the centre following the Nr.5 fold line to create the rudder. Do the same for the bottom folding the bottom edge to the centre following the Nr.5 fold line.
Fold the rudder edge following line Nr.6 for the top and bottom with a firm crease.
Fold the top rudder section folding on line Nr.7 for the top and bottom with a firm crease. This will form the two rudders of the F-14 Tomcat.
From the right side of the top triangle fold the outer edge to the centre crease following line Nr.8 with a firm crease. Repeat for the bottom section. This will create the co*ckpit and top wing section of the plane.
Flip the model over to the left side. Bring the top flap of the triangle down and fold on line Nr.9 upwards. This will be the beginning of the left wing for your F-14 Tomcat.
Strengthen the wing by folding the leading-edge following line Nr. 10 inwards
Shape the bottom nose section by folding on line Nr.11
Shape the bottom fuselage by folding on line Nr.12 upwards
Bring the bottom flap of the triangle up and fold on line Nr.13 downwards. This will be the beginning of the right-wing for your F-14 Tomcat.
Strengthen the wing by folding the leading-edge following line Nr. 14 inwards
Shape the bottom nose section by folding on line Nr.15
Shape the bottom fuselage by folding on line Nr.16 downwards
Pick up the plane flip it over and fold each side on line Nr.17 to create the main wing area.
Take to the Skies!
Your F-14 Tomcat paper airplane is now ready to fly! You can test the flight of your plane by gently tossing it in the air. You can adjust the position of the wings and tail to make the plane fly longer or make different manoeuvres.
Tips for a successful flight
- Use a smooth and glossy paper, it will make the plane glide better and fly farther
- Experiment with different folding techniques, you can make small adjustments to the shape of the wings or tail to see how it affects the flight
- Try different throwing techniques, like a gentle toss or a firm throw, to see which works best for your F-14 Tomcat
Creating a paper airplane F-14 Tomcat is a fun and easy hobby that can be enjoyed by aviation enthusiasts of all ages. With a little practice, you’ll be able to create a plane that soars through the air with ease. So grab a piece of paper and start folding!
