1793 reports of the killing of a Hector Munro by a wild animal in India may have inspired one of this man’s best-known poems

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As I said in my preview last week, “Tim was one of the rare players to win over $70,000 in their first two wins and not qualify for the Tournament of Champions”. If his gameplay has stayed at the same level, he has to be considered the favorite in this one. However, I did also note that in his initial games, he played too conservatively from the lead, only playing more aggressively when he was behind. That could be bad news for him if he gets a good start in this one. Amy was known for aggressive Daily Double betting in her initial run, while Scott’s one victory from February 2022 came after a late-game charge from Zoha Khalili that was very reminiscent of how things went in yesterday’s quarterfinal for Henry Rozycki. (I’m still shocked that Zoha wasn’t part of Second Chance last fall.)

Admit it, you said Rudyard Kipling, didn’t you?

Unfortunately, this one is about a century too early to be Rudyard Kipling. There’s another famous poem about a tiger (note that the clue takes great pains not to say the word tiger!) from around the time frame mentioned in the clue: William Blake’s “The Tyger”—the one that opens “Tyger Tiger, burning bright, / In the forests of the night”.

While on route to Madras in late 1792, the son of Sir Hector Munro (also named Hector Munro) was mauled by a tiger on Saugor Island, Bengal on December 21. Reports of the mauling didn’t make their way to England until the summer of 1793; the Times was first to report. “He went ashore with a party at an island where they had put in to water; and reclining with his companions under some trees a tiger sprang from an adjoining thicket, and seizing him in his mouth, tore the unfortunate young man to pieces.”

Getting this Final correct requires getting Kipling out of your mind, thinking, “What word here are the clue writers going out of their way to avoid saying?” and then making the requisite logic jump to Blake. I thankfully got off the Kipling train soon enough to get Blake in before the conclusion of 30 seconds.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • What derailed Tim here? A net -3 (0 correct, 3 incorrect) on the bottom two rows of the board. 16 correct and 1 incorrect in the top three rows is tough to make up when you lose $4,600 to incorrect responses in total.
  • Today’s box score: November 16, 2023 Box Score.

(Scores: Amy $12,200 Tim $3,800 Scott $2,800)

Amy: Limit your bet to $4,599—but really, there’s no reason to bet anything. (Actual bet: $0)

Tim: Standard cover bet over Scott is $1,801. (Actual bet: $3,800)

Scott: Limit your bet to $799 or less for the best chance of second. (Actual bet: $2,799)
