Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literary Characters) for Tuesday, February 6, 2024 (Season 40, Game 107):

A 1902 work says an enigmatic character has a half-English mom & a half-French dad, but this name of his is German for “short”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Matt Harvey, a healthcare administrator from Providence, Rhode Island

Crystal Zhao, a tech consultant from Bloomington, Minnesota
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, February 6, 2024 (2)
Deb Bilodeau, a restaurant server from San Francisco, California

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After Mira Hayward became the first semifinalist of this group in yesterday’s game, I am expecting to see a great battle in this one. Deb Bilodeau may have been just a 1-day champion, but their statistics are excellent, and I expect them to give Matt Harvey—who advanced into this competition via Second Chance—a spirited battle. Of course, this is an era where, at this level of play, everyone generally has between a 20 and 50% chance of winning; Crystal Zhao is just as capable of being able to pull off an upset in this one!

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to!

Correct response: What is Kurtz?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Kurtz is the central character of Joseph Conrad’s famous work Heart of Darkness; he is an ivory trader sent into the Congo in Africa. One important point here is that while a lot of sources cite 1899 as the publication of Heart of Darkness, that was when the work was first serialized. It was published in book form in 1902—hence why you see the year 1902 in the clue today.

While Kurtz from Heart of Darkness certainly served as the inspiration for the character Colonel Kurtz from the 1979 movie Apocalypse Now, I hope that none of our players give this Kurtz a commission; I can’t see that ending well for the player.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: The 1970s; 2 Books In 1; Actually, This Is My First Rodeo; Famous Pairs; Avengers, Who Said It?; 13-Letter Words)

Matt and Deb both got off to great starts; Deb, though found the first Daily Double just before the commercial break. Unfortunately, their score fell back to $1,700 after they couldn’t come up with both responses. Deb rebounded well to claw back some of the deficit in the second half of the round, but Matt still led after 30 clues.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Matt 6 correct 0 incorrect
Deb 6 correct 1 incorrect
Crystal 1 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Matt got a “congratulations to real life grown up Milhouse” message after his last appearance.
Crystal also got married, got an MBA, and got LASIK in 2023.
Deb had a doppelganger reach out to them.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Matt 9 correct 1 incorrect
Deb 12 correct 2 incorrect
Crystal 4 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Deb $3,500
Crystal $1,600

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Around The Atlantic; Layers; It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane!; At The Tiny Desk Concert; Sooner; Later, Dude)

It was Matt who got to both Daily Doubles in this round; his splitting of them meant he still held the lead, but things were still very close going into Final Jeopardy!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Matt 23 correct 4 incorrect
Deb 18 correct 3 incorrect
Crystal 7 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Matt $16,000
Deb $10,700
Crystal $5,200

This Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper; if you remember my preview, I said “here’s hoping Deb has shored up their wagering strategy”. Guess what: they did! A $0 bet from second place sends Deb through to the semifinals!

Tonight’s results:

Crystal $5,200 – $300 = $4,900 (What is ?)
Deb $10,700 – $0 = $10,700 (What- Hi Mom! <3) (Semi-Finalist)
Matt $16,000 – $5,401 = $10,599 (What is Shorty?)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Matt $16,000 Deb $10,700 Crystal $5,200)

Deb: If Matt makes the cover bet here, he falls to $10,599. I’d limit my bet here to $99 or less.(Actual bet: $0)

Crystal: Your only chance is if Matt and Deb both overbet. I’d go all in here and force a perfect bet from them both. (Actual bet: $300)

Matt: Standard cover bet over Deb is $5,401. I’d recommend doing that and not making a lower bet—Deb has a history of going big from second place, even if it’s not the best choice for them. (Actual bet: $5,401)
