Ken said the show welcomes back 3 Season 39 champs. Nope, it's two plus Matt courtesy of the SCC.
So many ways for Matt to have won the game and each thing went against him just enough to set up Deb for the win. Not enough on DD2--costly. Too much on DD3--costly. Not getting that quite solvable DD3 clue--ouch. Not quite good enough on $400 clues--opening for Deb
Originally playing:
Deb 1x
Crystal 1x and lost to Brian Henegar
Matt lost playing Cris
The FJ! clue was a match Crystal for me unable to work out a guess. Trying kids books got me nowhere from Baum to Barrie. A detour to Carrroll's cat was a waste of time. The German was not going to help me. It's the kind of clue in these 14 games that seems like bad news for the leader.

1902 has Heart of Darkness, Hound of the Baskervilles, The Virginian, Wings of a Dove, and also the non-novel Peter Pan.
I went with Tin Drum; like Mark, the German was no help, although it makes sense in retrospect.

I briefly thought of Tin Drum and I think I would have remembered the name Oskar (which I would have recognized was not German for "short"). No way in a million years could I have pulled up his last name of Matzerath.
But once we got to the end of the clue, I remembered the trivium about Mistah Kurtz and had plenty of time to re-read the clue to make sure it wanted the character and not the work or the author. I don't see a path for someone to reason their way to the right response. Either you know the fact or you know German for "short" or you spend 30 seconds spinning your wheels trying to think of books with short characters from around 1902. Other than the year, that's not going to lead you to Heart of Darkness. I don't recall Kurtz being short.
Good for Deb either recognizing her situation and making the right wager or maybe just hating the category and having things work out. So many contestants would have thrown the win back to Milhouse from her position.

Does half-English mom & a half-French dad help at all unless you remember the book very well? And is that but any more helpful? As if figuring out all 4 countries of origin would hand it to you...
If Kurtz was part Polish, that would have been helpful...
It does seem like Kurtz = short should have been something I picked up over the years...

Ha. My putting on of rodeos at the brewery has paid off! ...well, for the 8 second clue at least. I have put on the Calgary Stampede before, but I knew of it prior, so not counting that.
We're getting end of the season FJs early this year...
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Europa Europa (7), Tampopo (9), Baby Doll (6), First Love /2019/ (8)

They probably wanted us to remember the Luke Perry rodeo movie 8 Seconds...

I thought references to the 8 seconds come up frequently across all ways of life and in various jokes. Would have thought it polls well over 80% here. Request please.

I had the same reaction. I'm not a rodeo fan, but I've heard enough references to "staying on for 8 seconds" in pop culture over the years to have this one come to me immediately.

I'm trying to think of other "ways of life" in which that's a useful feat, practice, advice...

Tough FJ clue unless you, like me, knew that Kurtz meant short in German and got from there to “Mistah Kurtz, he dead!” Lucky for me those came to me fast for an Instaget, but I expect this one to poll low.

In Deb’s last game, they bet it all from second in a non-crush for no reason and FJ was a TS.
No chance for me on this one. I did know eight seconds.

I meant to look that up and forgot. Thank you. So it's quite possible we just saw the result of a contestant who went over their previous game, spotted the problem, and achieved enlightenment. It's good to see that happen.

Welp, consider me one of today's 10,000, cause hearing it in that context sounds unfamiliar to me.

I went with Klein but that more means "small" rather than "short".
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

That was me. I said Peter Pan just to have something. Pretty lame clue if you ask me.
