I got this FJ, even though they didn't tell us what his name means in German. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Playing originally:
Emma 2x
Jesse 1x
Patrick 2x
No competition from the contestants, so it would be between me & Ken to grab the trash on the numbers of the TV secret agents.
As if the NUMERICAL TELEVISION category was not enough fun for me there was CLASSIC TOYS & GAMES with a DD. Yes, please.
Patrick out-dueled Jesse on the DDs and that positioned Jesse to win from second place and dispatch the 2xers. Barely. Emma could not get in on enough clues to make her sole solve work for her.
That FJ! clue was not for me and I had no guess. I was trying to think of some famous sin in literature and got nowhere. I did not know enough to sense the gender of the author or the writer's country.
If the clue had spotted me the author or a year to help guess the author I could see myself still going Patrick's way over Emma's correct way.

Regarding the Scrabble clue, without double checking some Scrabble books, I remember the original name as simply Criss Cross. No hyphen, definitely no words.
Perhaps our Canadian Scrabble player can chime in on this.
A savvy FJ wins a game most would lose. Hooray!

And speaking of Scrabble, something I've always wondered: in tournament play, is there no jeopardy to challenges?

Due to the $6200 Patrick left on the table for DD3. Alternatively, with the wager he did make, Patrick could've tanked DD3 and gone on to win with a savvy wager from second. I'm not sure what the wager with the highest expected value would be there. Mostly just seems like a rough bounce of the ball.

Here is the relevant section of the Wikipedia page for Scrabble. In North America, the prevailing standard appears to be "challenger forfeits their next turn." I'm sure ATQ can speak more authoritatively.

Most tournaments there is. Challenge a valid word and lose your turn.

You can find early boards with both forms of the name...(I don't see any with a hyphen...yet!)

I almost rejected the right FJ response since the quote wasn't Reader, I married him, but sense and WECIB prevailed...
Similarly, I was glad to join Jesse in wildly guessing Duke of Wellington...
Very surprised by triple stumpers on perquisites and Heartbreak Hotel...
I was confused by "code numbers" in the Get Smart clue, or I'd like to think I would have got 86 and 99. I think of them as "secret identities"...
It may be stretching it, but I accepted Jack for myself when I blanked on his last name in 24...That show seems a long time ago now!

I recognized that the quotation must come from the same novel as "Reader, I married him," but had the same Jane Eyre/Jane Austen misstep Patrick did.
If Emma had named the diacritic in English, she still would have had less than half Jesse's score, so it didn't affect the outcome, all else staying the same. (Although the reversal did seem to take the wind out of her sails for a bit, so who really knows.)
