Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Meteorology) for Tuesday, March 15, 2022 (Season 38, Game 132):
It was feared this word caused panic, but in 1950 the USWB ended a ban on it in forecasts, saying prediction wasn’t impossible
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Simi Landau, an elementary school teacher from Washington, D.C. |
Ariel San Jose, a digital marketing manager from South San Francisco, California |
Amy Bekkerman, an academic copy editor from Durham, New Hampshire (1-day total: $16,100) |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: After being the only player to get yesterday’s Final Jeopardy! correct, Amy Bekkerman returns on today’s episode as a 1-day champion with winnings of $16,100. Ariel San Jose of South San Francisco and Simi Landau of Washington, DC are your challengers. Now, I can’t be the only person who has really struggled this week with the time change in North America. It really would be simpler if we just stayed on UTC−04:00 all year in the Eastern Time Zone.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Until the late 1940s, while they were dangerous and caused significant damage, tornadoes were seen as impossible to predict. However, in March 1948, Major Ernest J. Fawbush and Captain Robert C. Miller of the U.S. Air Force were able to successfully predict a series of tornadoes over the southern Plains, and were able to save lives at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma with their successful prediction.
There is a history of tornado forecasting (published in 2007 for the NOAA’s 200th anniversary) available at the NOAA website.

Game Recap:
Jeopardy! Round categories: Foreign Words & Phrases; TV News; Fashion; The Ancient Mariner; Water, Water; Everywhere.
Both of our challengers struggled with incorrect responses in the first segment, with Simi picking up three and Ariel a shocking four (however, the fourth one was refunded after the break). Amy also picked up the first Daily Double for $2,000.
The break seemed to help settle down the challengers, as both rebounded very well—Simi picked up five correct responses and Ariel four. Amy still held a small lead after Single Jeopardy.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Buildings in History; Glow-pourri; Authors; Movie Madness; Classical Music; Crossword Clues “Q”.
This round was mostly all Amy: she picked up both Daily Doubles for $5,000 apiece. However, Simi, buoyed by four $2,000 correct responses, kept Amy from having a runaway. Scores going into Final were Amy at $28,000, Simi at $17,000, and Ariel at $200.
In Final Jeopardy! today, Amy was only correct player, and that was enough for her to pick up win #2!

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
Amy: Standard cover bet is $6,001. If you feel really good about the category, your maximum reasonable bet is $10,999. I’d recommend limiting your bet to $6,001 though, as trailers often just don’t realize they need to bet aggressively here.
Ariel: There’s really not much you can do here unless either leader overbets. I like $198, but really, pick your favorite number between $0 and $200 to bet here.
Simi: You need to bet at least $5,000—but, really, you might as well bet $16,599—it maximizes your potential winnings and keeps Ariel locked out.
