Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Television) for Tuesday, November 21, 2023 (Season 40, Game 52):

This series grew out of a screenplay titled “Murdoch”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ed Hashima, a community college history professor from Sacramento, California
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, November 21, 2023 (2)
Nick Heise, a technical solutions engineer from Madison, Wisconsin
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, November 21, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As we move onto the last of our quarterfinals in the Clubs bracket of this Champions Wildcard, I am expecting a very well-played game today. All of Nick, Ed, and Sandy are all very strong players; Sandy’s average Coryat score in her initial run was $20,000, whereas Ed pretty much dominated everyone not named Sam Buttrey in Season 38’s Professors Tournament. Meanwhile, Nick had to face both Lawrence Long and Dave Rapp in his initial run. This one could definitely come down to “who finds the Daily Doubles”.

Back in 2011, British screenwriter Jesse Armstrong had such a hot property in a screenplay titled Murdoch that even Forbes magazine wrote an article discussing it. However, no movie was ever produced from the screenplay, and Armstrong reworked it into the TV series Succession. Still loosely based upon the Murdoch clan, the series instead features the Roy family and Waystar RoyCo. The series, which concluded this past spring after Season 4, saw its second and third seasons win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. (Its final season has been nominated for the award.)

One thing I will note, especially when it comes to television Finals: had these events taken place 20 years ago, this would be a slam-dunk Final Jeopardy for both players in studio and viewers at home. However, the general fracturing of today’s television landscape makes this clue much more difficult, as both players and viewers alike are much less likely to have watched the show.
